How do Discord roles work with memberships?

2 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026

A creator can give each membership tier a role in their Discord server. A member links their Discord account from their purchase and the role is added for them. It is removed when the paid period ends.

A membership tier can carry a role in the creator's Discord server. The creator sets it up once. After that, members link their own Discord account and the role is added and removed for them.

If you are a creator

Open Discord from your menu.

  1. Connect your server. You choose the server and add the Spenny Piggy bot to it. You need permission to manage that server.
  2. Pick a role for each membership tier. A tier with no role chosen gives nothing on Discord — that is fine.
  3. Move the Spenny Piggy role up. In your server's role list, the Spenny Piggy role must sit above every role it gives. Discord does not let a bot give a role that sits higher than its own.

Roles with admin or moderation powers cannot be chosen. A membership should open a members' space, not hand over control of your server.

If the bot is removed from your server, or loses the Manage Roles permission, the page tells you and roles stop changing until you connect again.

If you are a supporter

When your membership includes a Discord role, you see Link Discord on the page after you pay, and on that membership in My Purchases.

  • Press Link Discord and approve it on Discord. You do this once — it covers every membership you hold.
  • Your role appears within a few minutes.
  • The role stays while your membership is paid. If you cancel, you keep it until the end of the period you already paid for.
  • When your paid period ends, the role is removed. You are never removed from the server — only the role changes.

Unlinking

Open Account Settings and choose Unlink on the Discord row. The roles your memberships gave you are removed. Your memberships carry on as before, and you can link again at any time.

The role has not appeared

  • Give it a few minutes first.
  • Check you linked the Discord account you actually use in that server.
  • If it still has not appeared, the creator's server may need attention on their side. Your membership content on Spenny Piggy is not affected.
